April 1 – The municipal authorities of Poland’s Chorzow have unveiled plans to launch construction works on a new stadium for local club Ruch Chorzow in early 2017. In the first phase of the project, the facility will be fitted with a capacity of at least 4,500 seats.
Once completed, the stadium could have a capacity of up to 16,000 seats.
“The year 2020 is a realistic deadline for the completion of the construction of a new stadium,” said Mayor of Chorzow Andrzej Kotala.
The design of the sports facility was prepared by the Myslowice-based architectural firm GMT sp. z.o.o.
The cost is said to be PLN 60 million (€14.5 million), and this year, the municipal authorities are aiming to spend some PLN 2.5 million (€600,000 million) to finance preparatory works for the design and construction works.
Meanwhile, Ruch, which currently competes in Poland’s top tier Ekstraklasa, is struggling to avoid relegation this season. Currently lieing 15th out of the 16 teams playing in the Ekstraklasa, Ruch is in the relegation zone, with only 27 points.
