April 27 – He is perhaps Aston Villa’s most influential self-proclaimed supporter. But at the height of an election campaign, he suddenly forgot where his allegiance lay.
British prime minister David Cameron, who hopes to be re-elected on May 7, admitted he suffered a “brain fade” after accidentally saying in a campaign speech he would prefer people to support West Ham than other teams.
Cameron apparently became a Villa fan at the time of the team’s 1982 European Cup triumph because of his uncle’s involvement in the club.
Villa and West Ham wear similar colours and Cameron’s footballing gaffe was seized upon on social media before he later corrected himself.
” I’m a Villa fan,” he said. “I don’t know what happened to me, I must have been overcome by something this morning. But there we are, these things sometimes happen when you’re on the stump.”
