May 1 – The UEFA Champions League generates nearly £170 million for the European transport and tourism industry, according to research by travel website GoEuro.co.uk and app onefootball.com.
The research finds that potential income for a city will rise to £2,016,300 for passing the group stage and up to £4,032,600 for the semi-finals.
Looking at the costs of transport and accommodation only, the figures do not take account of the cost of match tickets. Average tourist expenses (inner city transport, expenses and dining) along with GoEuro’s own beer price and accommodation indexes were used to calculate how much cities could make.
Of 215 games, it was calculated there will be 778,700 journeys taken by away fans: 272,500 by train, 241,400 by bus, and 264,800 will journey by plane.
Berlin, where the Champions League final will be held, will be the big winner, with an expected £25,938,900 in accommodation, transportation, food and beverage sales, souvenirs and other expenditures.
British clubs Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City could all have expected to make an extra £1,344,200 each for their home cities if they had made it into the last eight.
