May 12 – Half of the clubs in the Bulgarian top professional division do not use social networks. The research, by Insideworldfootball.com, also found that two of the 12 teams in the league do not even have an official website.
In an era dominated by electronic media, the potential of new technology and social media networks, these findings are alarming, especially when taken into account against a backdrop of the lack of money that is plaguing Bulgarian football.
The study shows that six clubs who have established social networks rely mainly on Facebook, where they maintain their own pages. Although some clubs have enjoyed significant fan base, their presence on the Internet is too humble.
CSKA Sofia tops the rankings with nearly 300,000 followers on Facebook. CSKA also holds the leadership on Twitter, where the club is followed by 3,442 people. Compare this with the English Premier League champion Chelsea’s following of 5.56 million including a 35,000 gain in new followers last week.
Ludugorets, current champions of Bulgaria, who in recent years have won many fans throughout Bulgaria for their breakthrough in European clubs competitions, do not even have an official Twitter account. On Facebook they are followed by 69,131 fans.
One of the most active teams is Beroe who use almost all social media channels. As does Stara Zagora who have profiles on Facebook, Twitter, Google +, Youtube and Instagram. Until recently, their official website maintained language versions in English and German.
The Plovdiv teams of Botev and Lokomotiv have respectively 39,494 and 14,784 followers on Facebook. Botev has an official Twitter account with just 906 followers, the second most popular in Bulgaria. On its official Facebook page the club has only 8,381 followers.
Litex Lovech, Lokomotiv Sofia, Slavia Sofia, Cherno more Varna, Marek Dupnitsa and PFC Haskovo do not use any social channels. The last two clubs did not even have their own official websites.
