May 22 – Manchester United have announced the Kabam Field at the California Memorial Stadium as the venue for their US pre-season tour against San Jose Earthquakes. The stadium is on the campus of the University of California in Berkeley in the San Francisco Bay area.
The July 21 date now completes Man Utd’s four match US-tour itinery which starts in Seattle on Friday July 17 against Mexico’s Club America. The Quakes will be Man Utd’s second fixture before they face Barcelona in Santa Clara on July 25 and Paris St-Germain in Chicago on July 29.
Manchester United Group Managing Director, Richard Arnold, said: “Tickets for our match against Barcelona – four days after this fixture in nearby Santa Clara – have already sold out. This level of demand and interest in Manchester United and soccer makes it an exciting time to be returning to the Bay area.”
The four-match itinery is part the informal International Champions Cup, an ad hoc competition Man Utd won last year when they competed with AS Roma, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Liverpool for the title.
The tour in 2014 set a US record for a football (soccer) match in the US when 109,318 spectators piled into The Big House in Michigan to watch Man Utd beat real Madrid 3-1.
