Saudi tunnel assault earns Estoyanoff AFC ban and fine

Fabian Estoyanoff

May 25 – Former Uruguay international Fabian Estoyanoff, now playing in Saudi Arabia, has been banned for six matches by the Asian Football Confederation for assaulting a South Korean opponent following an AFC Champions League game earlier this month.

The Al Nassr midfielder chased Nam Tae-hee down the tunnel and threw punches before being dragged away after the Saudi champions’ 3-1 home defeat to Qatar’s Lekhwiya.

Nam had scored Lekhwiya’s second goal and won a penalty for the third in his club’s victory that sent Al Nassr out of the competition.

Estoyanoff, who represented Uruguay 31 times between 2001 and 2007 and joined Al Nassr in January, was also fined $10,000.
