May 26 – With rumoured investors about to step in to save Bulgaria’s CSKA Sofia from financial ruin, Croatian defender Tonci Kukoc (pictured) has stepped into the dispute attacking the Bulgarian Football Union for it failure to award his club a license to operate.
Because of their huge tax debts, CSKA failed to gain a license to compete in European club tournaments and it is likely that the club will lose its license for Bulgarian league as well – which means that the club will be dropped to the amateur football leagues.
Kukoc used his personal Facebook profile to attack the Bulgarian Football Union saying: “Bulgarian A group without CSKA is a tragedy!!! Did Bulgarian Football Union knows what is CSKA? If there is not CSKA, who will watch the Bulgarian A group???? Do not fuck with our club, CSKA is the biggest club in Bulgaria, show a little respect and give us a license for A group! BFU, please tell me what Bulgarian fans want to watch – CSKA vs Levski or Montana vs Pirin Blagoevgrad.”
Nobody in Bulgaria knows what the destiny of most famous club in the country is. There are indications that the State will try to help the club to save its license, allowing it continue to play in the elite division in Bulgaria – this would mean releasing the club from some of the tax debt.
Insiders say there are negotiations with a Turkish businessman who is ready to invest and cover all the debts of the club but no details have been released.
