June 9 – Bulgaria has started the reconstruction of its national stadium, Vasil Levski. The renovation will pass through three stages, said Bulgarian sports minister Krassen Kralev, who spoke yesterday after an inspection of the stadium.
The first stage, which will be completed within 49 days, is to instal a new grass surface, including a new irrigation system. The second involves the purchase and installation of a new scoreboard, and the third – building a roof above the biggest stand in the stadium.
Kralev said that in the near future there are no plans to build a new national stadium as the Vasil Levski will fully meet the needs of Bulgarian football.
“There are comments and wishes (for a new national stadium), but these are not projects. Firstly, the teams from A group (Bulgaria’s top division) must fix their own stadiums. We must repair Vasil Levski and only then to think about building a new stadium. The National Stadium is sufficient for the level of football we have. For now, our priority are the stadiums in A group and children’s and youth football,”said Kralev.
“It is important for football to enter in the schools. The problems in our football are very serious. Next year we will ensure BGN 1 million (€500 000) is invested in the youth sector. We should pay attention to it, so far the state has not done it,” he said.
Repairs to the stadium should be completed by the end of August, when the Bulgarian teams start their participation in the European club competitions.
