Sky wins 3-year renewal for La Liga rights in UK

Sky Sports and La Liga

August 6 – The TV bidding war between Sky Sports and BT Sport has been ratcheted up a notch with the former announcing it has renewed live coverage of Spain’s La Liga for the next three seasons.

The broadcaster claimed the deal “strengthens Sky’s position as the first choice for sport across the UK and Ireland and ensures La Liga remains a key part of an unrivalled schedule of live football.”

BT Sport, whose portfolio has been significantly strengthened by showing the Champions League in a three-year deal worth £897 million starting this season, was expected to rival Sky for its domestic coverage of the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona. But Sky clinched the deal that will include El Classico and the final of the Spanish cup. The agreement extends the partnership between Sky Sports and La Liga into its 20th year.

Javier Tebas, president of La Liga, said: “La Liga has a huge global fan base and by renewing with Sky Sports, the agreement provides us with the best possible way to showcase our league, our teams and our players to our UK and Irish audiences.”
