August 7 – Manchester City FC have signed Nexen Tire, the leading South Korean tyre and tubing brand, as the Club’s Official Tyre Partner. The club is the latest to announce a tyre manufacturer as a major sponsor – Yokohama recently took over as Chelsea’s shirt sponsor in an estimated £200 million five year deal.
The value of the Nexen deal was not announced but will be considerably less than Yokohama’s commitment as the package does not include the shirt branding.
Nexen will have a wide-ranging rights package said a club statment, “including an LED presence at all of Manchester City’s home games at the Etihad Stadium, Nexen Tire will also assume naming rights of the community bridge linking the Etihad Stadium with the City Football Academy.”
The club said the tyre company will become one of its most significant Asia-based partners.
The deal was announced by Ferran Soriano, Chief Executive of Manchester City FC and Ho-Chan Kang, President of Nexen Tire at the City Football Academy.
Speaking at the launch, Soriano said: “We have millions of followers in South Korea and we will be able to provide them with more engaging experiences. Nexen is not only a well-established South Korean brand, but has a strong ambition to grow globally like we do. This partnership builds a strategic relationship that will enable us both to meet our objectives.”
Nexen has pursued a rapid global expansion plan, not unlike Manchester City.
Ho-Chan Kang said: “We are very pleased to serve as the Official Tire of Manchester City FC, one of the best soccer clubs in Europe. Manchester City FC is the perfect partner for Nexen Tire, considering its position in the league as one of the top-class football clubs with their decisive investment in and recruitment of top stars… We will strengthen our brand power through continuous sports marketing.”
