August 21 – Manchester United have continued their seemingly unstoppable march to the top of the overall premier league club Twitter table, again clawing back more than 15,000 followers on the lead of table toppers Arsenal and Chelsea.

But the real story of the week is a halving of the weekly growth figures from the season’s opening week.

In an opening week that saw twitter feeds buzzing with activity, last week there was a significant drop off in the number of times clubs tweeted. Tweet fatigue already?

As a total percentage the number of tweets dropped 0.84% to 0.38%. In numbers terms that is a drop in total tweets in the week 7/8/2015 to 14/8/2015 of 6,144 tweets, to 2,818 tweets in the week 14/8/2015 to 21/8/2015.

The corresponding effect seems to be a similar decrease in the growth of total followers – a week on week growth change from 0.89% to 0.57%. While the drop in tweets is greater than drop in followers there is clearly a strong cause and effect.

In numbers the increase in total followers from 7/8/2015 to 14/8/2015 was 276,840. For the week 14/8/2015 to 21/8/2015 that dropped to a 176,594 increase.
