August 31 – Five spectators, including two minors, were injured as a safety barrier gave way at the recently opened Nouveau Stade in Bordeaux late in the Derby de l’Atlantique.
The incident happened after Milan Gajic scored Girondins de Bordeaux’s second goal against FC Nantes in the 87th minute and comes despite requests having been made to the manufacturer of the safety barriers to reconfigure them to better withstand pressure from fans celebrating – a similar incident happened when the first goal was scored at the stadium in the inaugural game on 23 May.
After the regional derby, attended by 26,307 spectators, a Bordeaux security official said: “There are five people injured, including two aged 12 and 14 who were picked up by their parents.”
Speaking to the media, the official could not explain the extent of the injuries but said, “For one, I know it’s at leg level.”
The stadium, which officially opened on 18 May 2015, will host 5 matches in UEFA Euro 2016 including one quarter-final.
