October 7 – Bundlesliga club SV Darmstadt 98 is planning a €33 million modernisation of its stadium with the renovation targeted to be completedby the end of 2018.
Currently, the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor has a potential capacity of 30,000 but, due to safety reasons, this is restricted to about 17,000 on match days.
The 18-month upgrade will expand this the capacity to 19,000 under one roof.
The project was unveiled by Mayor of Darmstadt Jochen Partsch who said that the next step of the project will consist of launching a formal tender for the construction works.
Following the presentation of the new design of the stadium, Rudiger Fritsch, the German club’s president, said that the new design was selected following talks with the club’s supporters.
SV Darmstadt 98 is currently 10th out of the 18 sides competing in the German top tier.
