October 12 – The week of the international break has resulted in some remarkable twitter follower gains for English Premier League clubs with Liverpool in particular putting on more than 50,000 followers and jumping to second place in the weekly ranking.

Man Utd as usual topped the week with an increase of more than 58,000, but Liverpool’s 124% week-on-week increase in followers suggests that with arrival of Jurgen Klopp they may at last be able to make a sustained challenge to upset the now traditional big three on Twitter of Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Liverpool may even mount a challenge on the pitch but recently that seems to have been a more elusive target for the club.

Leicester also had their strongest week to date with a bumper 345% increase in new followers pushing them up to sixth place in the weekly chart.

Generally the number of tweets from all clubs has been very much lower in the international break than would be expected in a usual match week. Watford tweeted just 13 times sparking speculation that everyone had cleared out for a week’s holiday in Italy with the club’s mercurial owner.

The positions in the total ranking of twitter followers by club is unchanged with Watford having broken through the 100,000 followers total mark. A far cry from Arsenal’s 6.39 million followers. Perhaps a holiday in Italy will refresh their challenge.
