Smoggy future for German clubs facing loss of VW sponsor cash

November 23 – Bundesliga clubs Worlfsburg, Hannover 96, Werder Bremen and Schalke 04 as well as second division 1860 Munich are on a list of sports sponsorships Volkswagen are considering dropping to cut costs amid the ongoing emissions scandal.

Europe’s largest carmaker is battling for its future and last week cut €1 billion from its 2016 investment plan as a result of the crisis.

According to Bild am Sonntag, Volkswagen spends about €1.5 million per season on each of its main German clubs. Last month, VfL Wolfsburg said it had postponed plans for a new multimillion euro youth training centre.

In a statement to Reuters, VW responded it “had not yet been decided” what level of sponsorship, if any, would be dropped.
