November 30 – The five FIFA Presidential candidates have been asked to nominate their top three priorities if they end up being elected as part of an online survey organised by the pressure group NewFIFANow and run by its co-founder and British parliamentarian Damian Collins.
“In the eleven months since NewFIFANow was established, we have had the opportunity to speak with a wide range of people in the community and what their concerns are about FIFA,” said Collins. “This includes fans, players, sponsors, other advocacy groups and grassroots volunteers.
“NewFIFANow has said consistently that world football’s governing body needs more democracy, more transparency and more accountability and this should apply to the FIFA Presidential election also.”
Thirty questions have been sent to the candidates, developed on the basis of concerns and expectations expressed internationally.
They include who they would vote for to stage the 2018 and 2022 World Cups (even though most of them would technically not be eligible to vote under the rules); and whether they would publish total remuneration packages and pecuniary interests for the President and key FIFA executives.
“The sponsors who contribute so much to world football, amateur and professional players, governments, volunteers and the community who pay their hard-earned money to play the game or go to matches, deserve to know who these men are and what they believe in,” said Collins. The results of the survey will be published next month.
All five candidates have been invited to attend a meeting in Brussels to present their credentials at the end of January, co-convened with the European Parliament.
