December 2 – Former Brazilian powerbroker Jose Maria Marin, who pleaded not guilty to corruption charges when he was extradited to the United States from Switzerland as one of the infamous ‘Zurich Seven’, has been having trouble meeting the $1 million in cash required as part of his $15 million bail conditions.
Arrested in Switzerland in May while preparing to attend at the FIFA Congress, the 83-year-old former Brazilian FA boss is accused of racketeering, wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering.
Marin’s lawyers indicated he has been struggling to comply with the cash part of the bail arrangements.
“We had hoped to post the $1 million cash component today, but ran into some difficulty,” attorney Charles A. Stillman wrote to U.S. District Judge Raymond J. Dearie on Monday.
“A bank check in the amount of $769,000 will be filed with the clerk of the court tomorrow and the balance by Friday, April 4.”
Marin, who headed Brazil’s preparations to host the 2014 World Cup, has been given permission to live with tight restrictions in a New York apartment until his case is resolved. In July, Webb, the former CONCACAF president, also pleaded not guilty and was released on $10 million bail. He is currently under house arrest.
Webb and Marin were among 14 individuals, seven of them detained in Zurich, named in the remarkable US indictment alleging their involvement in bribes of more than $150 million linked to the award of broadcasting and hosting rights over 24 years.
