December 18 – It has been a tumultuous week for Chelsea and Leicester City. On the pitch Leicester deepened the Blues at Chelsea with a Premier League victory that put them top of the league and eventually pushed Jose Mourinho out of Stamford Bridge. On twitter Leicester had the biggest percentage increase in followers of any Premier League club this week at 4.25% – Chelsea recorded a 0.45% increase.
The Leicester numbers are worth comment as their 10,800 new followers sees them break into the top six in the weekly Twitter ranking for the first time, dislodging Spurs who generally hold sixth position.
Man Utd are still ahead on a week-to-week basis, but it has been a week where all clubs gained significant new followers.
Arsenal are still at the top of the overall followers table, with Man Utd in second place. Whilst the gap was reduced from 102,598 to 94,617 this week, the difference only narrowed from 1.54% to 1.42%, showing a leveling off in Man Utd’s exponential growth.
Crystal Palace, flush with new money, topped the chart of most tweets this week with Man City in second. At the bottom of the weekly tweet table were Stoke and a sheepish Man Utd who have hit a poor run of form. Man Utd’s fewer tweets may explain the comparative slowdown in their growth of new followers.
