January 21 – Sepp Blatter and Michel Platini are still being paid by FIFA and UEFA despite being unable to work because of their respective eight-bans by FIFA’s ethics committee.
FIFA told Reuters that Blatter would continue to receive his salary until FIFA elect a new leader on February 26 and UEFA followed that up by confirming that Platini was also being remunerated.
“Until the election of a new president on February 26, Mr Blatter is the elected president and therefore – according to his contract – is entitled to receive his remuneration,” said a spokesman for FIFA’s Audit and Compliance Committee.
Blatter’s bonuses have been stopped, the spokesman added, but eyebrows seem sure to be raised as to why the veteran Swiss is still being paid a basic salary – no actual figure was provided – when he hasn’t worked for five months and when his presidential duties have been taken over on an interim basis by African football chief Issa Hayatou. It is not known how much Hayatou is receiving to do the job.
UEFA, meanwhile, have confirmed that “Michel Platini is still receiving a salary from UEFA, and will continue to do so until further notice.” Again, no salary details have been made public.
What until further notice actually means is open to question but one assumes it has to do with whether the Frenchman wins his appeal – and the timing of when he is replaced as UEFA president if it comes to that.
