February 12 – Germany will officially bid to be among the first countries to experiment with video replays if lawmakers approve live trials next month.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) is to vote on the issue at its Cardiff meeting on March 5 and the Bundesliga wants to be selected if the idea gets the thumbs up.
“This was unanimously decided by the DFL (German FA),” a statement said. “A two-year testing phase in Bundesliga matches is planned.”
Brazil is also hoping to stage live trials at this year’s national championship, which starts in April.
The technology must be properly tested and evaluated before it can be approved for use by national federations. If it goes well, it could come into force in 2018-19 but not in time for the Russia World Cup.
IFAB’s board of directors strongly recommended in January that the trials be given the go-ahead so unless there are last-minute objections, the idea – a revolutionary move in terms of changing the laws of the game – should be rubber-stamped in Cardiff.
