November 14 – England lost 1-0 to Brazil in the Khalifa Stadium here tonight but the real winner was Qatar’s bid to host the 2022 World Cup as fans from both sets of countries praised the organisation and atmosphere of the occasion.

Thousands of supporters mingled happily in the Fanzone set up specially to entertain them in the hours leading up to the match.

Stalls included areas selling English and Brazilian food, a Beatles tribute band and a special booth where supporters could record messages of support for Qatar’s bid.

The zone also had a number of footballing games for fans to take part in, with beach football games taking place alongside one-on-one keep the ball contests and penalty taking games which measured the accuracy and speed of the shots taken.

Fans were also taking part in their own Brazil versus England matches on video games consoles, serving as a warm-up to the real event to take place in the 50,000-seater stadium behind them.

As one resident English fan said: “It is brilliant to see that all the visitors are finding the local traditions so fascinating – they seem to be really interested in everything going on.”

Another England fan said: “This is a fantastic experience and a cultural melting pot.

“You wouldn’t get something like this in England, and it is a really family-friendly atmosphere down here – it’s a terrific build-up to what should hopefully be a great match.”

Hassan al-Thawadi, the chief executive of Qatar 2022, said: “Qataris are passionate football fans and we were truly excited to have this opportunity to watch the English and Brazilian stars on our home turf.

“It is time for the Middle East to host a major event such as the World Cup.

“The World Cup has evolved from being just a sport to being a great event which brings cultures together.

“Maybe people don’t know Qatar as well as they should.

“But it is passionate for the game and if you look with an open mind, it has lots to offer.

“There should be no limits to people’s imagination.”
