Capello in pay league of his own

December 11 – England coach Fabio Capello (pictured) is paid more than any other manager at next summer’s World Cup, according to a report published today.

According to the Spanish newspaper, Marca, which Capello used to write a column for, the former Juventus and Real Madrid manager is paid £6 million – three times more than his closest rival.

Capello’s annual wage equates to £120,000 per week.

Fellow Italian Marcello Lippi, who manages their country’s national side and led them to victory at the last World Cup in Germany in 2006, is in second place with £1.8 million with  Bert van Marwijk of Holland on £1.6 million, in third, while just behind is Switzerland boss Otmar Hitzfeld, the former Bayern Munich manager.

Capello, 63, also earns substantially more than the managers of the two teams widely regarded as favourites for the tournament in South Africa.

For coaching Spain, Vicente del Bosque earns £1.3 million, while Brazil’s Carlos Dunga makes £755,250.

German coach Joachim Loew earns £1.4 million a year.

Surprisingly, Diego Maradona, considered one of the greatest players ever, is paid only £739,900 to coach Argentina.

Further down in the pay stakes are the United States Bob Bradley, on £246,599, and Matiaz Kek of Slovenia and Rabah Saadane of Algeria, both said to earn £221,902 a year.
