January 21 – German firm Max Boegl has been given a 655 million zloty (£144 million) contact to complete the stadium being built for the European 2012 Championships in Wroclaw after the previous company were sacked.
Wroclaw, one of four Polish cities hosting the finals, decided to end its agreement with Mostostal Warszawa because of construction delays to the 44,000-capacity stadium, the city’s Mayor Rafal Dutkiewicz announced last month.
Max Boegl were awarded the contract after Polish construction company Budimex withdrew its offer, although the company said it was still interested in signing a cooperation deal with the new builders.
But there could still be delay as Mostostal, which was a joint venture between Polish and Greek companies, is currently appealing against the decision to sack them and is claiming several million zloty in compensation for breaking the contract.
They still also have to remove all their equipment from the site and they claim it could take up to three months to clear it.
Krakow, which missed out when the four Polish cities to host matches during Euro 2012 were originally chosen, has now appealed to the Polish Football Association and UEFA to be allowed to replace Wroclaw.
