June 21 – The row over whether FIFA vice-president Jack Warner should be able to combine his role with a senior Cabinet post in the Trinidad and Tobago Government continues to rumble on even though he has been cleared to continue in both positions.
The country’s Attorney General Anand Ramlogan said last week, after consulting group of legal experts, including Britain’s Michael Beloff QC, that Warner should be allowed to keep his post as Minister for Works and Transport and continue his football work, which also includes being the President of CONCACAF.
But Warner is now calling for the resignation of Dr Eric St Cyr, the chairman of the Intregrity Commission, who has called on him to choose between his Government position or his one with FIFA.
Warner said: ”I am calling on Dr St Cyr to step down immediately as chairman of the Integrity Commission.
“He must do what is right by stepping down.”
Warner was furious by an interview that St Cyr gave over the weekend that re-opened the debate when he thought the Attorney General’s decision had settled it.
St Cyr said: ”My personal view is that I think he [Warner] should choose.
“I know that he is likely to be a very tremendous Minister of Works and so on, but I also know that he really serves the nation and the region on this world platform, but as difficult as that may be, I thought that he should choose one or the other.”
Warner said: ”I am disappointed that the chairman of the Integrity Commission would come out and publicly express his personal opinion on Jack Warner in a matter involving collective responsibility.”
