Poland begin preparing for terror threat during Euro 2012

August 10 – Euro 2012 poses a challenge for anti-terrorist services and “at this stage of preparations we consider all kinds of threats, even those which are remote but cannot be completely ruled out,” Deputy Polish Minister of Interior Adam Rapacki said.

“Poland is a fairly secure country, the level of [terrorist] threat is low, but a great concentration of people expected during the Euro 2012 soccer games can inspire various groups to try and manifest their presence.,” he said.

“We attach great importance to getting prepared for this kind of situation.”

Specialist equipment for detecting radioactive, chemical and explosive materials will be used during the Championships in Poland, which they are co-hosting with the Ukraine.

The Polish air space will be protected during key events to prevent attempts at hijacking a plane and crashing it.

Matches in Poland are due to be held in Warsaw, Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan.

Public awareness campaigns will be launched to draw attention of Poles and foreign visitors to possible threats.

Border checks at Poland’s border with other European Union member countries will be reinstated for the duration of the Euro 2012.

The border will not be closed but the number of border guard and police patrols will be greatly increased, Rapacki explained.
