September 29 – South Africa has followed up this year’s World Cup by announcing it intends to bid for the 2015 African Nations Cup.
The South Africa Football Association is understood to have already informed to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) that it wants to stage the continent’s main regional competition.
South Africa last hosted the Nations Cup in 1996 when Bafana Bafana beat Tunisia in the final.
A report in the Sowetan newspaper says SAFA president Kirsten Nematandani (pictured) made a request to CAF on Tuesday following a decision taken at a management meeting in Johannesburg.
“We are still enjoying the success of the World Cup and we hope it will be good for us in our bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations,” the paper quoted him as saying.
“There will be no question of infrastructure because it is here, accommodation is here.
“There will be no question of transport because it is here, world-class stadiums are here too.
“We have everything.
“We are going to update the Government about this development.”
The next Nations Cup, in 2012, is being hosted jointly by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
The following year, when the tournament switches to odd-numbered years, it will be staged in Libya.
