March 27 – Rome’s Court of Appeal has reduced former Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi’s jail term to a year.
The 73-year-old was found guilty of manipulating the Italian transfer market using the former football management agency GEA.
The organisation was run by Moggi’s son, Alessandro, and it was accused of using threats and violence to force players to sign for the agency and specific clubs, decided in a way to help Juventus’ prospects in Serie A.
Alessandro Moggi’s jail term was reduced to five months, and neither of the pair will spend time in jail due to Italian rules which stipulate that sentences of under two years are suspended.
Luciano Moggi was infamously banned from all footballing activities for five years in 2006 as a result of his role in the Calciopoli match fixing scandal which rocked Italian football, and saw Juventus stripped of its 2005 and 2006 Serie A titles as well as being relegated to Serie B.
