March 17 – Adidas finally confirmed on Wednesday morning that Paul Pogba has agreed what is believed to be a 10-year, €40 million deal with the company.
The confirmation came in a Tweet from Adidas, timed to make maximum impact ahead of Juventus’ Champions League clash with Bayern Munich. As if on cue, the game began with a Pogba goal, but the match ended in dramatic fashion with the German club staging an amazing comeback to go through to the next round.
In a tweet, addressed to the 23 year old midfielder Adidas say: ‘The boss of swagger. @paulpogba: Welcome to the squad’ http://twitter.com/adidasfootball/status/710027875735498752
In a follow-up, 15 minutes later, Adidas tweeted pics of the exclusive boots designed with and for Pogba: https://twitter.com/adidasfootball/status/710031632170926081
Pogba commented on the new deal, saying: “This is the first sponsor contract I’ve signed and it’s a very important decision for me. I chose Adidas because we have shared passions and values. Adidas has the same vibe as I do, on and off the pitch.
“I love music, dance and fashion but my biggest passion is football and I needed a brand that would give me the space to express myself and explore new frontiers. In Adidas i found a partner with the same goals as me.”
Speaking about his involvement in designing his own boots, Pogba said: “Adidas believes in my dream of building hype in the world of football. I hope I can leave a footprint and add something exciting and new to this iconic brand. The best is yet to come. This is pogboom.”
News of the deal had been extensively trailed ahead of Wednesday’s announcement and the recruitment of one of the world’s most exciting young players is a coup for Adidas, wherever the much sought after player, who has been compared to the great Patrick Vieira, ends up playing in the coming season.
