Spurs secure Pochettino as key part of future through to 2021

May 13 – Tottenham Hotspur’s Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino has signed a contract extension which commits him to the north London club until 2021.

Pochettino was appointed in May 2014 on a five-year deal and has masterminded a impressive revival at Tottenham, guiding them to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League in his first season and a run at the title in the current campaign.

With one game to go, Tottenham are guaranteed Champions League football next season and will finish second, their highest ever Premier League finish, if they avoid defeat at relegated Newcastle in Sunday’s final series of games.

Pochettino, four of whose players are expected to be in the England squad for Euro 2016, was spotted meeting  former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson this week, prompting rumours he could be a target for United in place of Louis van Gaal this summer.

But he was quoted as saying: “We have a long-term project at Tottenham and huge belief that we can achieve something big here for the future. This club has all the ingredients to continue to challenge at the very top in both the Premier League and in Europe. We want to be here to be a part of what I believe will be a special period in the club’s history.”
