Gorka Villar quits CONMEBOL role

July 20 – Is the timing deliberate? Just as Angel Maria Villar llona announced his bid for the UEFA presidency, so his son Gorka Villar has left CONMEBOL, where he was director general, by “common accord”.

Gorka worked under three CONMEBOL presidents who were indicted by the U.S. Justice Department last year in the ongoing bribery scandal and has now followed them out of the South American confederation.

Gorka Villar has long been been sought by the authorities in Uruguay over claims he ‘extorted’ eight Uruguayan clubs to withdraw a complaint of corruption filed against CONMEBOL in 2013 .

Under its new policy of transparency, FIFA is uncomfortable with family members holding separate positions of power because of potential conflicts of interests and that could be one reason, in the absence of further information, why Villar Jr has suddenly departed.
