August 31 – Manchester United’s rate of Twitter growth slowed last week against the previous week, from 85,000 new followers to 70,500. In contrast Manchester City grew their weekly new followers to 22,100 and can be expected to grow again on the back of exciting Premier League performances.
With the league currently on a break for international fixtures, the twitter activity around the Manchester derby when they return could be a measure of whether City can shake off the domination of United, something they have managed to a degree on the pitch but not off it.
Arsenal and Chelsea matched their previous weekly twitter growth performances, though with Arsenal spending £54 million in the transfer market then we may see a weekly boost in their new followers number.
Liverpool are slightly outperforming last season in terms of weekly new followers, but with all the hype around Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool make-over it might have been expected to see slightly higher numbers. Liverpool’s new Main Stand opens for the first Premier League home game in early September so a ramp-up in Twitter activity and comment can be expected.
Below the top five clubs in the twitter followers rankings, only Spurs have over 1 million followers, though West Ham are closing in on the magic million mark and on current growth rates could pass it in November.
Leicester City, who had a huge boost in followers following their Premier League win last season, are the next closest but their rate of growth has slowed slightly.
The last time Burnley were in the Premier League (2014/15), they spent the season at the bottom of the Twitter table. This season they look set to be at the bottom again though on the weekly growth they beat Bournemouth.
One reason they are consistently at or near the bottom of the table may be that they are not tweeting enough – they are at the bottom of the tweets table this week by some distance.
