August 7 – With the international break it might be reasonable to assume a drop-off in Twitter activity, and in terms of tweets across the Premier League that was the case with the total number dropping to 2,412 against 6,214 the previous week. But the number of new Twitter followers across the league was up.
Overall clubs put on more than 270,000 new followers as opposed to 250,000 the week before. This seems to disprove the theory that the more tweets made means more followers gained that generally holds true for most clubs in other weeks.
Notable gains this week were made by Bournemouth (moved from the bottom of the weekly to 11th) who beat South Coast rivals Southampton for the first time and moved above the 200,000 followers mark.
Stoke City also had a better than usual week of growth, putting on 5,800 followers. Leicester City picked up from last week’s poor performance moving into seventh in the weekly table with 7,300 new followers.
In the race between Everton, West Ham and Leicester to break the 1 million followers mark, West Ham look the winners. They are 32,500 followers off that target and growing at about 6,000 new followers a week.
At the top of the table Arsenal (again in second place) will likely break the 8 million followers mark this week. They grew by almost 50,000 followers this week and are 23,000 off reaching the new milestone. But this is still some way off Manchester United who are 280,000 off 9 million followers. The last week’s figures show a growth of 68,500.
