September 15 – Gaming console manufacturer PlayStation has launched its fourth season of sponsorship of the English Schools’ FA and the PlayStation®Schools’ Cup, the biggest grassroots football competition in England.
So far more than 200,000 school chidren have played in the competition – more that the population of Gibraltar who have just achieved their first FIFA national team ranking (205th).
The sponsorship covers 20 tournaments for both boys and girls across secondary school age categories, range from the main PlayStation Schools’ Cup competitions and District tournaments through to ‘Small Schools’ and ‘B Team’ trophies.
Played between September 2016 and March 2017, the National Finals will be played at a single venue as a multiple day football Festival. Premier League male and female stars are lined up to make school appearances throughout the season.
PlayStation UK Managing Director Warwick Light said: “We are delighted to be teaming up with the English Schools FA for the fourth year to host what has become the most high profile grassroots football programmes in the country. Not only does the PlayStation Schools’ Cup give secondary school children from around the country the chance to battle it out on the pitch to win a place at the School’s Cup Festival later in the academic year, but it gives them the chance to meet some of their footballing heroes along the way.”
