September 16 – German pay-TV sports network Sky Deutschland has announced it will add a new web channel that will focus on video content, skysport.de.
The web channel will take content from Sky’s live broadcasts and Sky Sport News HD, but it will also create additional content that will not be available on TV. The addition a a new channel will increase the broadcast rights opportunities for German football, and the competitive value of those rights for the rights holders.
Sky Deutschland’s business is based on live broadcasts on its pay-TV channel, sports news on Sky Sport News HD, and on free-TV starting this December – all have their associated social media platforms. Skysport.de will broaden the editorial width for the channel as well as supporting its premium rights acquisitions.
The new website will be financed via ad sales and will not require a Sky subscription. Sky’s operations in the UK and Italy could be expected to share some of their original content to the new channel. The growth of a European Sky network and an internal encouragement for the channels to work together on acquisition opens a number of opportunities for rights holders and Sky, perhaps not dissimilar to US network ESPN’s model in South America and Asia.
