September 19 – Real Madrid vs Sporting was the most exciting match of last week’s Champions League fixtures, almost twice as exciting as the second placed match – Legia Warsaw vs Dortmund – where the fans perhaps became a little overheated as Dortmund (with a strong Polish support in Germany), hammered the Polish champions 6-0.
But when it comes to clubs, Barcelona top the excitement list. Hapless Celtic, who were hammered 7-0 by Barca, were way down in 29th position. They can take comfort that they are perceived to be more exciting that Italian giants Juventus who were bottom of the 32-team table.
Perhaps most concerning for the English Premier League teams is the dominance of Barca in terms of excitement so early in the Champions League – their score is almost twice that of Manchester City, the highest placed English team in fifth position.
Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Dortmund fill the second, third and fourth spots.
The Nissan Excitement Index scientific formula, developed in conjunction with Loughborough University, calculates an excitement score based on match stats including, goal(s) scored, involvement of star player(s), booking(s) and fan attendance.
Prior to the start of the group stages Nissan revealed that Leicester City’s tournament debut wsa the most anticipated moment across Europe (50%). though only 1% of fans believed they could win the trophy. Leicester City are fifth in the excitement index after match day one.
