August 11 – FIFA has donated $1 million (£616,523/€700,918) to those affected by the crisis in Somalia, brought on by the drought which has struck East Africa in recent months.
The donation will go straight to the International Committee of the Red Cross to support their work helping some of the 13 million affected by the crisis.
The Red Cross will use the money to implement a strategy providing life-saving aid alongside projects to revive and boost the livelihoods of badly-hit communities.
More than $300,000 (£184,957/€210,275) will go towards purchasing and transporting food, with the remainder going towards other activities in Somalia.
It is hoped that more than a million people will be helped by the Red Cross in the coming months.
FIFA’s intervention is part of their solidarity programme, which has in the past come to the aid of Japan, Haiti, Pakistan and those south eastern Asian countries hit by the devastating tsunami of December 2004.
