JCU and Rex Sport combine to launch top level sports law course

October 18 – Rome-based John Cabot University (JCU) has joined with exclusive sports law association Rex Sport to launch their Advanced Course in International and Comparative Sports law, a masters-level course aimed at law and other graduates who want to build careers in sports law.

The two bodies have designed a unique programme that will draw on the members of Rex Sport to deliver lectures from practitioners at the very front end of sports law including Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) judges, mediators and private practice lawyers.

The residential course will be based in Rome and will have more than 400 hours of classes that will run from January to May/June, as well as 400 hours of individual exercises.

This is followed by a compulsory 400-hour internship as part of the programme. Students from the programme are hosted by members of Rex Sport in their law offices and sports institutions where they will receive a high level of tutoring and practical training – many will likely end up staying on as employees.

Rex Sport previously collaborated with Barcelona-based ISDE on a sports law course it had introduced, but has severed ties with that institution, moving its expertise to JCU, an American liberal arts university located in the heart of Rome.

Rex Sport was founded in 2002 as an exclusive sports law association and comprises sports lawyers, mediators and arbitrators from 19 countries. A core focus has been to establish links and co-operate with academic institutions “with the aim of contributing to the development of sports law, its values and the ‘lex sportiva’ at a worldwide level.”

Rex Sport members are lecturers at academic programmes, seminars and sports law events worldwide.

The course curriculum will cover all areas of sports law with a special module on Doping, developed in collaboration with the Italian anti-doping institute as well as the Italian Olympic Committee.

JCU and Italian football federation FIGC have also agreed a broad-based collaboration which will include the establishment of a ‘FIGC Fellowship’ to a student who meets the academic criteria and who will be chosen by the FIGC.

Registration for the course is open though only limited numbers will be accepted. The cost to students is €27,000.
