December 21 – Twitter week-on-week growth rates increased again this week for Premier League clubs, up to 253,000 across the league from 228,000. This was a week that saw Premier League fixtures on five days as three rounds were crammed in before Christmas.
The number of tweets were also up with Leicester City leading the way with 400 tweets, perhaps not surprisingly with the club winning a BBC Sports Team of the Year Award.
Chelsea, who top the league at Christmas with a seven-point lead, were the second most active with 340 tweets.
Arsenal had the greatest week-on-week growth in twitter followers – an increased growth of 6,880 – but at 47,800 were still a way off the 62,700 new followers Manchester United gained. Man Utd are now closing in on the 10 million followers mark.
A rejuvenated Manchester City were close behind Arsenal with a week-on-week increase of 6,860 followers. But at 3.8 million total followers and fourth place in the overall ranking, Man City are a long way off Man Utd’s league leading 9.5 million followers.
