Man Utd smash Twitter follower marks over holiday period

January 4 – Premier League clubs amassed a total 605,000 new Twitter followers over the two-week Christmas and New Year period. A massive 25% of those followers were for Manchester United.

Arsenal were fairly close behind Man Utd with nearly 125,000 new followers, while table topping Chelsea were surprisingly over 50,000 behind in third, but 5,200 ahead of Liverpool. Manchester City kept the gap close being 4,100 behind Liverpool.

Man City have just announced a second ‘hackathon’ which will focus on digital fan engagement. It will be interesting to see if some smart ideas come out of the hack that can materially make a difference to their rate of growth of followers across social media platforms.

18 months ago Chelsea were on a par with Arsenal in terms of total Twitter followers. Now they are more than 1 million behind.

On a percentage growth basis Middlesbrough topped the league with a 3.12% growth of 5,700 new followers to take them to a total of 189,000.

In the middle of the table, Southampton gained over 10,000 new followers ahead of Everton, West Ham, Stoke and Sunderland.

In total teams tweeted nearly 8,500 times with West Ham the most active with over 610 tweets.
