September 26 – Jennifer Pogorelec O’Sullivan spoke of her delight at the opportunity to work with “the best female soccer players in the world” after being appointed as the chief executive of Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS).
O’Sullivan was previously the vice-president of legal and labour affairs at the Arena Football League (AFL), and will be taking charge of the organisation and business of the WPS’ front office, playing a key role in the league’s strategic direction.
She also brings a variety of experience having worked with the National Football League (NFL) and been a New York city attorney.
“WPS is comprised of the best female soccer players in the world and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be affiliated with these extremely talented women,” said O’Sullivan.
“I look forward to working with our board of governors and the WPS team to help build upon the league’s successes of this past season and continue the growth of the league.”
WPS earned a 50 per cent revenue increase this season as well as capitalising on the Women’s World Cup to record increased attendances during the second half of the last campaign.
O’Sullivan will be the third chief executive in three years, but T Fitz Johnson, the WPS board of Governors’ chairman, spoke of his optimism at her appointment.
“The board has complete confidence that Ms O’Sullivan is the right person to be our chief executive,” he said.
“Her breadth of experience in professional sports and business development complements the efforts that we are making to ensure the future of the League.
“As you know, to find someone with this type of background is difficult at best.
“The pool that you have to reach from is limited, I think with her background that she will fit in just fine.
“She will have to learn some of the nuances with soccer, but her background as an attorney and in arena football will help out a lot.
“She also has an acute business background, which also goes a long way towards building this league and bringing our corporate partners on board and understanding the business that is women’s sports.
“We look forward to her leadership during this important next chapter of growth for WPS.”
