Gold Cup losing its shine already? CONCACAF and CONMEBOL talk of merged tournament

Mexico win Gold Cup

January 18 – The two confederations representing the Americas are reportedly studying the idea of creating a brand new competition featuring the leading countries in both regions.

The Bloomberg news agency claimed that CONCACAF and CONMEBOL would stage the new tournament every four years with CONCACAF scrapping the biennial schedule of its flagship Gold Cup and holding that every four years as well to bring it into line with the other major continental tournaments such as the European Championship and the Copa America.

The idea, which would have huge broadcasting and sponsorship potential, was apparently prompted by the success of the 2016 Copa America whose centenary edition  was staged in the United States as a one-off. All 10 teams from CONMEBOL plus six CONCACAF nations took part in what was the best attended Copa America in the tournament’s history.

Last week Lagardère Sports won the international sales rights to CONCACAF events including the Gold Cup, taking over from IMG and adding to an impressive portfolio that includes all commercial rights to Asian Football Confederation (AFC) events.
