Man City gives Man Utd a red face on Facebook, as Hull find friends everywhere

February 10 – Man City looks like they may have found their saviour on the pitch in Gabriel Jesus whose arrival in Manchester has sparked a reinvigoration of Pep Guardiola’s missionary zeal. And their disciples are flocking to worship with yet another massive leap in followers with 104,900 new Facebook likes this week.

Once again the dwarfed their Red (faced) neighbours with Man Utd in comparison only managing to add 60,660 new likes. In between the two north western clubs were Londoners Chelsea who also had a massive boost with 83,100 new likes.

Manchester United’s Facebook growth was down from 74,000 last week. Yet elsewhere the club still topped the weekly social media growth charts on Twitter and Instagram, and by some distance over their rivals. Man City ranked fifth in the Twitter ranking and fourth on Instagram

The story for Instagram follows the more normal lines, with Man Utd’s increase of 108,400 new followers this week totally dwarfing second place Chelsea (58,900 followers). Chelsea’s second positions on Instagram and Facebook mark a resurgence in their social media growth which had slowed during last season’s poor on-pitch performance and especially during manager Jose Mourinho’s more toxic behaviour.

Hull capitalised on social media after their 2-0 win over Liverpool last week. The Tigers had the greatest percentage growth in Facebook (1.51%), and Instagram (4.52%) this week.  At 1.2% growth they were also only just behind Burnley (1.28%) in new Twitter followers growth this week. The growth boost ranked them sixth on Facebook and eight on Instagram for the week – a huge uplift from their more recent positions in the bottom three of the tables.
