April 11 – Manchester United broke their own impressive Twitter record this week putting on a massive 95,700 new followers, a weekly record for this season. It was also another good week for Chelsea who continued their weekly twitter dominance of Arsenal with their own season record 67.200 new followers.
Overall twitter followers in the Premier League were up week-on-week from 0.64% to 0.73%.
While Man Utd led the weekly percentage growth at 0.9% and almost 100,000 new followers, Manchester City broke the 100,000 mark in terms of total tweets made (270 tweets last week). This helped them to 24,900 new followers. In contrast Man Utd have tweeted 35,000 times in total (240 times last week).
Top of the tweeters was Hull with 462 tweets giving them the second highest percentage growth in new followers at 0.84% (2,900 new followers for the week). In second place was Chelsea with 386 tweets.
At the bottom of the table Burnley put on just 1,400 new followers while Middlesbrough are just getting quieter and quieter with just 160 tweets – thought that was the same number of Arsenal.
Lower league performance does not necessarily equate directly to lower twitter growth numbers. Sunderland, increasingly looking a certainty for relegation, were eleventh in the Twitter growth table with 4,200 new followers for the week.
