Will Toon Army mobilise on social media or will Man Utd continue to paint it Red?

April 25 – Newcastle United’s re-ascent to the Premier League will immediately catapult the club into ninth place in the Premier League social media rankings, but is it a position that perhaps reflects the under achievement of what is undoubtedly one of England’s most passionately supported clubs?

Ahead of Newcastle are Everton and West Ham in the Twitter ranking, while Leicester City are significantly (by more than 4.5 million) ahead of them on Facebook. On Instagram the club is pretty much out the picture. The Toon Army will need to mobilise its social media more effectively if it is to take advantage of its Premier League opportunity this time round,

Ant and Dec – who have over 6 million likes on Facebook – could help them.

Over the past 5-week period, growth of Facebook likes is actually lower for many clubs than the previous five weeks, with some showing almost no growth.

Manchester City are easily the fastest growing Facebook user in the Premier League at over 100,000 rivals. They are generally the most innovative and adventurous when it comes to testing new technology and social media platforms on their fans.

But it was their more traditional rivals Manchester United and their larger overall Facebook following (73 million against 24 million) that Facebook chose to use to demonstrate their developing Camera Effects Augmented Reality platform. One suspects that while that might give them the numbers it won’t necessarily land them in the hotbed of creativity they are seeking to drive the technology’s users – that lies firmly on the blue side of Manchester at the moment.

Much of this was lost in the background of Facebook’s lack of handling of the live murder broadcast on the social media platform. Clearly there is work to do across the board.
