May 30 – What should have been a day of celebration ended in tragedy when at least four people died and many others were injured during a stampede prior to the sellout league title game in Honduras between Motagua and Honduras Progres.
The incident was apparently caused by the sale of too many false tickets.
“First and foremost, our deepest condolences to the people who died outside the stadium, due to selling of fake tickets and an increase in the number of fans that the police didn’t expect,” said Motagua club president, Pedro Atala, whose club were crowned champions.
Motagua denied too many genuine tickets were sold and said they warned “responsible authorities immediately that fake tickets were being circulated”.
When the game went ahead, Motagua won the title play-off match, held at the 35,000-capacity national stadium in Tegucigalpa, 3-0 and 7-1 on aggregate.
