July 4 – The biggest football supporters’ group in the USA have jumped on the bandwagon by calling on Gregg Berhalter (pictured) to step down following the team’s damaging first-round elimination from the Copa America.
In 2026 the US and Mexico will take the lead with their Canadian neighbours in hosting the World Cup. While the football people in those countries will have only a limited role in the organising (FIFA want to do everything themselves, it’s their ball apparently), to most people worldwide the perception will be that the countries are hosting.
July 2 – The USA were controversially dumped out of the Copa America last night after a 66-minute goal that could easily been called offside was awarded in a VAR review, handing a 1-0 victory to Uruguay.
June 28 – The US soccer federation has condemned online racist abuse of their players after their 2-1 defeat by Panama at the Copa America.
June 20 – Much has been made of the Copa America in the US being a test event for the 2026 World Cup, but there has not been so much comment about the importance of the event for six Concacaf nations competing as they build their teams towards 2026.
June 20 – With all eyes still very much on Euro 2024, across the Atlantic in Atlanta the Copa America gets under way tonight with the opening game between Canada and two-time defending champions Argentina.
June 19 – Canada Soccer is moving on from its previous media partner Mediapro following a settlement with Canadian Soccer Business (CSB) to the legal action filed in January 2024 with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
June 13 – The long-standing issues of VISA entry to the US for Cubans took a different twist this week with the Cayman Islands men’s team pulling out of a World Cup qualifying fixture in Cuba.
June 9 – The friendly between Mexico and Brazil was paused after the Mexican fans chanted the gay slur ‘puto’ from the stands behind the goal.
June 9 – Billed as a warm-up for Copa America and a step on the US team’s journey to their 2026 home hosting of the World Cup, the US were brought down to earth with a bang following a 5-1 dismantling at the hands of Colombia.
June 9 – Comic-turned-TV brand Marvel is teaming up with the Canadian Super League (CPL) for a series of Marvel Super Hero Days during the 2024 regular season.
June 7 – San Diego and Portland Thorns of the NWSL have been drawn in the same group with Club America of Mexico for the inaugural WConcacaf Champions Cup. Panama’s Santa Fe FC and the winners of the premliminary round play-in will make up the five-team group.
June 7 – Concacaf has drawn the groups for the second editions of its 2024 Concacaf Central American Cup and Caribbean Cup competitions, to be played between July and December 2024, and serve as qualifiers for the 2025 Champions Cup.
June 6 – US non-profit America SCORES that provides free after-school programming combining soccer, poetry, and service-learning, has launched an initiative with Concacaf and the FIFA Foundation in Miami.
