August 9 – France did the double in Russia this summer, not only winning the World Cup but also beating Brazil to the top of a ranking of countries who added the most social media followers during the tournament.
July 18 – Brazil won the World Cup of Social Media with more than 193 million interactions on Instagram, according to data technology specialists Primetag. Across the whole World Cup there were more than 990 million interactions generated by the content on the platform.
July 17 – Twitter, which has ruthlessly axed hundreds of football accounts without explanation or recourse to appeal, has broadcast its first full match live with a team from Italy’s Serie A.
June 27 – Mexico are leading the social media World Cup with more than 9 million interactions since the start, according to social media marketing platform Socialbakers. That is a whopping 2.5 million interactions ahead of second place Germany.
June 12 – Portuguese technology company Primetag has launched a social media ranking tool ahead of the Russia 2018 World Cup that provides up-to-the-minute aggregated data from the Instagram accounts of players, coaches and teams with the purpose of measuring influence.
February 15 – Internazionale, who recently opened their state-of-the-art ‘Media House’ to drive the club’s content proposition, have taken another new step entrusting their official Instagram account to their mercurial Brazilian midfielder Rafinha for a day.

June 20 – FIFA has embraced the new Augmented Reality (AR) technology opportunity on the Facebook platform to give fans a new way of showing their support for their teams.
May 24 – Manchester United convincingly topped the Twitter growth stats for the 2016-17 season putting on more than 2 million followers over the season. Arsenal also increased their Twitter followers more than 2 million while another two clubs – Chelsea and Manchester City – had increases of more than 1 million over the season.

March 28 – In a week of international fixtures that has seen growth in the number of tweets made by Premier League clubs down by more than 50% on the previous week, growth in followers has increased by 11.5%.
